Physical descriptor

Automatons are men of metal, each built for a specific task on the Moon of Marvels floating above Ootopyllidrak. Their shapes are as varied as their purpose. Some are crude boxes with spindly limbs and strange eyes, others appear as large humanoid pieces of clockwork. No matter the shape all automatons are built around a Clockwork Core, much like another species heart, this clockwork core is where their true mind lies. It is a center of consciousness and creative magic that allows automatons to form sentience. Not all automatons are sentient, but on occasion one of the creations of the gnomish peoples will come to an awakening. When these awakenings happen it can be jarring for the automaton, and they often go through a process known as "reconstitution" In which they will reform themselves into a newer and upgraded form. Automatons found to be modifying themselves in these ways are cherished and called the efficient ones. They are seen as essential for automaton life to continue its existence, as these machines are the only ones capable of creating entirely new automatons.

Society

Automatons are organized based on their tasks. Each was made with a specific job and so most fulfill that function without the need for leadership. However the awakened Automatons who begin creative endeavors are elevated to religious positions where they are supported in their efforts to create new things. Often these awakened automatons are the source of new constructs and modified inventions.

Beliefs

The Automatons believe that maintaining the clockwork moon and the constructs who inhabit it is a sacred duty. They do not believe in immortality, but do believe that the length of their lives are directly tied to their dedication to duty. The better they maintain themselves and others the longer and greater their lives will be. This philosophy has caused automatons to embrace the awakened automatons as a sign that their dedication has truly elevated the existence of all constructs. With continued effort they can continue their races existence endlessly.
